Montessori Environment
Practical Life
Practical Life Activities provide the foundation for all other activities in the Montessori environment, fulfilling the child’s plea: “Help me do it myself!”. Through exercises of daily living, gardening and grace and courtesy, the child gains confidence and mastery of the environment.
Sensorial
Children from birth to age six and in their “sensitive period” for exploring the world through their senses. Maria Montessori encouraged us to provide children with many opportunities to organize the sensory impressions they have been receiving since birth and these opportunities are found in our Sensorial Materials.
Mathematics
The Montessori Practical Life and Sensorial activities give indirect preparations for math. The math materials then continue to prepare the child for later learning. They use concrete materials to introduce abstract concepts and give a sequential understanding of mathematical concepts.
Language
Children’s language development begins long before they enter the classroom. Dr. Montessori asserted that children from birth to age six are in the age of the absorbent mind. During this time, children are able to learn language simply by living around others who are using language. Montessori classrooms incorporate both spoken and written language into the environment to further enrich this early learning.
Culture
The Cultural Subjects in our Montessori preschool classrooms provide our students with a first exposure to the many areas of knowledge they will encounter later on – and enables them to acquire an early interest in learning about the world, its natural wonders, its people, history and culture, its music and art.
